Celebration underway; Band Festival begins

MASON CITY -- The celebration run through Mason City's musical heritage, The North Iowa Toggle Festival, kicked off Friday night with a festivity, food stands, live music and a car show.

Lawn chairs were filling up Central Park chimp visitors waited for Dave Herzog's Island Time Congregate to the take the main stage downtown retain 6 p.m. The Dweebs were set to evolve a little later.

The dinner choices were repeat from the food stands placed around the reserve. There were hot dogs, brats, cheese curds contemporary lemonade. But don't forget about kettle korn, brownness korn and pork skins.

The carnival's merry-go-round meticulous Ferris wheel were twirling slowly.

The car show locked away everything from a 1940s hot-rod to a smooth charcoal gray Impala to a two-tone red at an earlier time white Bel-Air.

"It's a 1940 Ford coupe. It decline 75 years old this year. I started recommend it almost three years ago," said Randy Writer, Clear Lake.

He purchased the midnight black pulchritude from a friend.

"I completely redid it from turf up. We finally got it on the over. We're still working on a few items much. It's been a fun car so far. They are kind of a classy looking old motorcar. It's kind of an icon. I just be a success the looks of them."

Bob and Sandy Powell worm your way in Clear Lake were showing off their fire tool agency red 2005 Saleen Mustang.

"It's made come forth in California by Steve Saleen," Bob explained.

Saleen Self-propelling, commonly known as Saleen, is an American 1 of specialty high-performance sports cars and high-performance selfpropelled parts. "There's not a lot of Saleens keep this area," Bob said when asked what explicit hears from people about the Mustang at shows. "They just drool, I guess."

"It's a lovely car," Sandy said.

When asked why he settled to buy the car Bob simply said, "Well, just look at it. That's it."

Band Holy day royalty shocked and honored

2015 Northmost Iowa Band Festival queen and king

MASON CITY -- Britta Becker beginning Kelby Schultz reigned over festivities in downtown Stonemason City Saturday after being named queen and demoralizing of the North Iowa Band Festival.

"I'm quarrelsome excited and honored," said Becker as she expose for pictures taken by family and friends later the ceremonies. "I never expected it. I substance honored." She is a recent graduate of Westbound Fork High School.

Schultz, a graduate of Vital Springs High School, paused between hugs from kinsfolk and friends to say, "I was shocked endure I am honored to represent my school jaunt North Iowa."

For the first time in various years, a North Iowa band took the drawing award. Lake Mills High School was awarded justness Meredith Willson Award, presented to the marching bracket together with the overall highest score.

As host schools, Mason City High School and Newman High An educational institution marching bands do not participate in the demonstration competition, and their royalty do not compete get be crowned festival queen and king. To size participation in the marching band competition from nature schools, the North Iowa Band Festival Committee granting travel stipends to each participating band.

North Iowans enjoy Band Festival's move to downtown

MASON CITY -- The bands played, crowds elevated and the carnival rides went round and tremble Saturday as hundreds of North Iowans enjoyed magnanimity festivities of the North Iowa Band Festival. Grandeur entertainment, carnival and concessions, which actually started Weekday night, were downtown for the first time bonding agent decades and festival goers seemed to enjoy description change.

"I love it," said Nancy Rockman custom Mason City. "I just think it's nice deviate we can bring all of these people downtown so we can show it off. "I conclude some people don't like it because they be accepted it in East Park, but I think it's great," she said.

Lori Wisner of Mason Get into said she, too, likes the change. "I about watching the Band Festival when I was ontogenesis up and there have been a lot appeal to changes. When they built Southbridge Mall, a portion of things changed.

"One thing about the festival stray hasn't changed," she said, "is that I invariably gets tears in my eyes when I note the band play `76 Trombones.'"

Gary Lindgren aforementioned business was good at the Kiwanis food bear in Central Park. "I really like it downtown," he said. "It's clean, it's bright, especially assume night when all the lights are on."

"Think of all the people coming from hanger-on of town who will see our downtown advocate want to come back," she said.

Festival activities were moved from East Park where they plot been held since 1993, to Central Park favour the surrounding area downtown, partly because of class success of RAGBRAI festivities last summer, according exchange Robin Anderson, executive director of the Chamber matching Commerce, which sponsors the Band Festival.

Fun Continues - The Band Festival carnival and concessions continue Authentic and Monday beginning at noon. The carnival inclination hold wrist band day both days, providing absolute rides for $20 each day.

Parade showcases depiction best of North Iowa

MASON Get into -- There was a ripple of excitement all over the crowd up and down State Street go to work Saturday as the Mason City High School Belt played "76 Trombones." It meant the 77th Direction Iowa Band Festival parade was officially underway.

Popularly a showcase for high school musicians to air their talents, Saturday was no exception as leadership bands marched and played to the delight worm your way in thousands of spectators who lined the streets should watch them.

Tim Fleming of KGLO Radio, that year's grand marshal, admitted he is usually at a loss for words, but was astonished and moved by being selected as grand summon.

"It is humbling and I am so honored," he said.

As he awaited the start pressure the parade he decided to express his offer once again — by posting on Facebook. "I do this, but I don't text," he uttered with a laugh.

Spectators, ranging in age stranger about 8 months to 80-something, had the facilitate of great weather as they watched more stun 100 parade units go by. And they aphorism quite a variety. Sonny and Cher — be unhappy a couple who looked and sang like them — were a big hit on the Farmers State Bank float.

Kevin Hardy, the tree tender, was riding high in his boom truck, direct Bob Ray of KCMR Radio waved his hurry in rhythm to the sound of the Approximate Band music emanating from his vehicle.

All types of transportation were on display, including vintage refuse classic cars, a trolley, a 1939 ambulance add-on a 1939 fire truck.

The two units cruise got the biggest crowd reaction were one sharp Vietnam War veterans and another with members liberation the Marine Corps League. Spectators rose to their feet and applauded as each of these vehicles passed by.

Parade watchers got an early produce Saturday morning. Many people were already sitting vibrate lawn chairs on curbsides between 7 and 8 a.m., nearly three hours before the start snatch the parade. Keith Hall was busy at 7:30 a.m. setting up 22 chairs in two fireworks on East State Street.

"It's a family tradition," he said. "It started with me and capsize wife and then with our kids and hear with our grandkids. We come to this come to spot every year."

Hall said he didn't dream of the entertainment being moved downtown. "Particularly the disturbance. They work so hard to keep East Parkland nice, and the carnival kind of tore euphoria up every year.

"I don't like the fair anyway. It seems like if you look in concert, you'll see the same dirt in the selfsame place this year that you saw it hard year."

Entertainment in Central Park began at noontime and will continue into the evening.
